Power BI alone is built for reading plans, not writing them.
True Planning in Power BI means the planner can type, comment, spread, and submit data back into the planning model — not just view a dashboard or export a workbook. Most CPM vendors offer export or live read from Power BI. deFacto is in the smaller group that enables full write-back: dF Reporter allows planners to type values, attach comments, spread totals, and submit from within the Power BI dF Modeler visual. The number goes into the connected deFacto model, not into a local Power BI dataset. (Source: BPM Partners Vendor Landscape Matrix, July 2025.)
How Power BI write-back works in deFacto
A finance team installs the dF Modeler visual in their Power BI report. On Input Template pages, planners can type values into cells, attach text comments, spread a total across periods using the spread basis picker, and submit their data. Pending edits are shaded until submitted, so planners can review exactly what will change before committing. When data is submitted, the values write into the connected deFacto model — the same model that stores actuals, budget, and every other plan version.
dF Notify can also run from the dF Modeler visual, monitoring subscribed values from the audit log and displaying alert notifications alongside the planning data. dF Foresight can be triggered from Power BI, running a TimeGPT-2.1 forecast and writing the result into a deFacto scenario that is then visible in the same dashboard. The Power BI experience is not a read-only view of the plan — it is a full planning interface.
Three Power BI architectures: export, live read, write-back
Export: The planning tool generates a file (Excel, CSV, PDF) that the team imports into Power BI. No live connection; data is stale as soon as the export happens. Most planning vendors support this.
Live read: Power BI connects to the planning tool’s data store with a live connector. The dashboard reflects current plan data. Planners cannot submit changes from Power BI — they must return to the planning tool. Some vendors, including Planful, offer a live read connector.
Write-back: Planners can type, comment, and submit from within the Power BI visual, directly into the planning model. Data stays current and the submission is traceable in the audit log. deFacto, with dF Reporter, is in this group. Lumel also offers write-back via its Power BI-native EPM plugin; the distinction there is architecture — Lumel plans natively inside Power BI/Fabric, deFacto is Excel-native with the same write-back extended to Power BI.
The BPM Partners Vendor Landscape Matrix, July 2025, identifies write-back of plan data into the actuals store from Power BI as a capability held by a small group of vendors. Recent developments for deFacto in the survey include live reporting and write-back from Power BI and PowerPoint, and the GridRange feature.
Reporting satisfaction scores: deFacto leads the field
In the mid-market peer table, deFacto scores 4.80 on reporting — above Vena (4.55), Planful (4.50), and Prophix (4.10). In the enterprise peer table, Anaplan scores 3.70 and Lumel scores 4.00. (Source: BPM Partners Vendor Landscape Matrix, July 2025.) The reporting score reflects the quality of both the Power BI write-back capability and the broader reporting architecture.
AI forecasting and alerts also run from Power BI
dF Foresight runs Nixtla TimeGPT-2.1 from the dF Modeler visual in Power BI, writing the forecast into a deFacto scenario. dF Notify displays notification output in the same visual when subscribed values change. This means write-back, AI forecasting, and alert monitoring all run from one Power BI visual — not three separate tools. For teams that primarily plan in Power BI, deFacto provides the full planning loop from a single visual.
Lumel comparison: Power BI-native plugin vs Excel-based planning with dF Reporter write-back
Lumel packages EPM as a Power BI plugin or Fabric workload — planning happens natively inside Power BI. deFacto is Excel-native: planners work primarily in Excel, with the same write-back capability extended to Power BI via dF Reporter. Peer scores (from separate peer tables — Lumel is enterprise, deFacto is mid-market): deFacto overall 4.93 vs Lumel 4.80; reporting 4.80 vs 4.00; dashboards 4.50 vs 4.00. Lumel customer support: 5.00 (enterprise table) vs deFacto 4.60. If your organization plans natively in Power BI and does not need Excel write-back, Lumel’s plugin architecture is designed for that use case. If Excel is the primary planning surface with Power BI as a secondary interface, deFacto’s architecture fits that workflow. See compare to Lumel for the full comparison.
